Typography Tool

Bare

Bare sets short and medium-length text — headlines, taglines, paragraphs, labels — and comes with a complete type design editor, so the typeface you set it in can be one you drew from nothing. Two workspaces, one file, no account required.

Visual flourish distracts. The power is in the writing.

the whole point

Type, down to the outline

Most tools let you pick a typeface. Bare lets you draw one, compile it, and use it in the same tab a second later. Every line below is a value you can drag in the glyph editor.

Where the work happens

workspace one

Text

A canvas of freely positioned text blocks. Drag, resize, rotate, align, lock, hide. Select several and edit their shared values at once.

typographic control

  • Typeface, weight 100–900, italic, size, line height, tracking
  • Word and paragraph spacing, indent, alignment, case, colour
  • Optical margin alignment, so the edge looks straight instead of measuring straight
  • Editable ready-made styles: Heading, Subheading, Body, Label

placing things

  • Alignment guides that snap to other blocks and to the canvas edges
  • A grid and columns when the eye needs help
  • Export to SVG — text in your own typeface becomes real outlines
  • Copy out as HTML and CSS

workspace two

Font

The full Basic Latin alphabet, 96 glyphs, with search and group filters. Start from a TTF, OTF or WOFF you already have, or from a skeleton: Bare Sans, Grotesk, Geometric, Condensed.

drawing

  • Pen, freehand with automatic curve fitting, rectangle, ellipse, knife, measure
  • Node and handle editing, snapping, contour direction, side bearings
  • A preview that shows the typeface as you draw — several sizes, between neighbouring letters

parameters & families

  • Weight, width, slant and contrast, previewed live, then applied to one glyph or the whole font
  • A standard family from Thin to Black, italics included, in one click
  • By parametric derivation, or by interpolation between masters
  • Ligatures, alternates and up to 20 stylistic sets

fitting & shipping

  • Pair and group kerning with a live preview
  • Metrics and info: ascender, descender, x-height, cap height, license, copyright
  • Export TTF, OTF and WOFF — several styles at once
  • Compiles in the background, ready in the Text workspace right away

the unglamorous part

The compiler is ours

The font compiler is written from scratch. Outlines in both flavours, the character map, the layout tables, the metrics, the compression — produced without an external library. It is the least visible part of Bare and the part that took the longest.

what it isn't

Bare is not a word processor. There is no:

  • table of contents
  • footnotes
  • page numbers
  • long-document management

Short and medium text is the whole job. Everything in the interface is there to shape it, and nothing is there to manage a hundred pages of it.

projects & accounts

Nothing to sign up for

Guests get everything
The full editor works without an account. Both workspaces, every export.
Saves itself
Work is written to the browser automatically and survives a reload or a closed tab.
Guest work carries over
Whatever you started as a guest moves into a new account when you sign up.
Files
Save and open projects as .bare files, or keep them in your account — save, open, rename, download, delete.
Username and password
No email address. Changing the password signs out every other device.
No silent overwrites
You get a warning before overwriting a project that changed in another tab or on another device.
Finding your way
A guided tour through the whole application, plus light and dark themes.

Open it, draw a letter, set a headline in it.
